Invitation to commemorate the Lithuanian partisans who died in the Battle of Varčia in 1945
On 11 June at 13.30. A commemoration "Varčia aplaistyta krauju" will be held in Varčia forest, at the partisans' memorial cross (Dušnioniai forest district, 223 block territory, Daugai sen., Alytus r.), to honour the memory of the Lithuanian partisans who died in the Battle of Varčia in 1945.
The event is organised by the Alytus District Municipality Cultural Centre and the community "Varčia kaimynai". Partners. The project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, Alytus District Municipality.
Two battles between Lithuanian partisans and the NKVD took place in the Varčia Forest. 14 June 1945. The first battle took place in the Varčia Forest, between Alovė and Daugai. During the military-combat operation carried out by the battalions of the 220th Frontier Regiment of the NKVD, the aim of which was to destroy the partisan detachment of the Lithuanian army led by retired Lieutenant Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, according to different data, 30 to 47 partisans were killed (including 2 women), and 6 to 14 partisans were detained.
On 23 June, the second Battle of Varčia took place. It was fought by partisan units led by Adolfas Ramanauskas, Julius Čaplikas, Kostas Barauskas-Vėžys, Julius Jauneika and Vaclovas Dusevičius.
Between 61 and 63 Lithuanian partisans were killed in the two battles of Varča.
